A Yarn with a History

The Wild Base carries a story that begins beyond the walls of Hue Loco. It was originally developed through my other fiber company, High Country Wool, which focused on locally sourced, sustainable yarn. There, in partnership with Jennifer, it was first released under the name Flock.

From the start, this yarn was about supporting local ranches, prioritizing sustainability, and celebrating Colorado’s exceptional Merino. When High Country Wool completed its chapter, this fiber found a new home with Hue Loco, carrying forward the same commitment to ethical sourcing, community stewardship, and connection to the land. Today, Wild continues that legacy, offering the same quality and values in a new home and a new chapter.

The Story of Colorado Merino

Colorado Merino is where strength meets refinement. Raised in high altitude pastures and shaped by an arid climate and demanding seasons, Merino sheep thrive in the rugged conditions our state offers in abundance. That environment produces a fiber defined by resilience and clarity, wool many consider among the finest Merino grown in the United States, rivaling even Australia’s celebrated clips. Grown close to home, this is fiber with a true sense of place.

Exceptional genetics create brightness, length, strength, and natural luster, while thoughtful husbandry, expert shearing, and careful grading reveal the fiber at its best. Colorado Merino is the foundation of our Wild Base. After one skein, the difference becomes unmistakable. Our Wild Base is offered in our in-stock semisolids in the following:

Wild Sock
100% Colorado Fine Merino wool, non-superwash, 2-ply fingering weight, 460 yards / 100 grams

Wild DK
100% Colorado Fine Merino wool, non-superwash, 2-ply DK weight, 260 yards / 100 grams

In addition to our in-stock semisolids, two of our Wild colorways are blended at the mill. These skeins combine Colorado white Merino with Colorado black Merino to create two distinct naturally heathered shades: a light, warm gray and a mid-toned, warm gray. Each skein carries the depth and subtle complexity of the fibers themselves, offering a quietly nuanced color without dye. They work beautifully as a contrast to our in-stock semisolid colorways and are lovely to use for the body of your shawl or sweater.

Soft Enough, Strong Enough

Can a 100% Merino yarn be soft enough for next-to-skin comfort while remaining strong enough to withstand wear, laundering, and years of love? Wild was created to do exactly that! Light and airy in the hand, soft without compromise, and quietly lustrous, Wild skeins are gentle enough for sensitive skin while offering the durability needed for garments meant to be worn often and well. Each skein is built to become an heirloom piece, carrying the tradition of fiber, craft, and care passed down through generations of shepherds, ranchers, and makers. Similarly, it is meant to be worked into pieces that travel from hand to hand, passed down within your family and cherished for years to come.

Fiber with a Local Footprint

Our Wild yarn base is crafted from 100% Colorado-sourced wool and spun close to home within the Mountains & Plains Fibershed. Through this yarn line, we are able to support local ranches, regional mills, and sustainable wool practices in our own backyard. Our shepherds and ranchers prioritize natural flock management, animal husbandry practices, and thoughtful stewardship of the land. Every skein carries the natural beauty of Colorado wool and the knowledge of generations, creating a direct connection between the ranch, the land, the animals, and your hands.

If the term ‘Fibershed’ is new to you, it refers to a geographically defined area from which raw textile materials are responsibly sourced. This growing movement is experiencing traction around the globe as it empowers producers and consumers to challenge textile production patterns. Based in Loveland, Colorado, we are a part of the Mountains & Plains Fibershed. Our rich and varied community has its epicenter in Golden, Colorado and extends in a 300 mile radius.

Rooted In Stewardship

Wild is rooted in responsible sourcing and thoughtful stewardship. The Colorado Merino behind this line comes from farms that prioritize ethical animal care and sustainable land management, working in balance with the landscapes that sustain their flocks. Careful grazing practices help protect soil health, water resources, and local ecosystems, while supporting the ranching communities who make this fiber possible.

Every skein of Wild reflects a commitment not only to exceptional yarn, but to transparency, respect for animals, and long-term environmental responsibility.
